Fashion

All my life I have tried to establish my own personal style. Growing up in Wilmington and in my job at Sweetwater, I have realized that as a whole, people around here are scared to try something new or different. As quickly as some trends come in, they go out and you can watch that happen. We get so many cool or different items in at SW that we absolutely cannot sell. Last summer we had several styles of high top Vans that sat on the shelf. All the employees bought a pair but everyone else who tried them on said they wouldn't know how to wear them. We eventually put them on sale for 20% off and then yellow tag clearance them and we still have yet to get rid of a decent amount of them. Then there is bandeau style that is coming in. Two years ago Free People put out 3 or 4 different styles of bandeau's but no one bought them. People didn't know how to wear them. Even when we told them how to do it they still were not keen on it. Now bandeau's are coming back as something to wear underneath baggy tank tops. We have one style in store and more on the way. We also have lots of tank tops to wear it with. We put both items on our mannequin and explained to people how it is done. We have also worn this style ourselves but for some reason people won't take to it. It's frustrating to not order stuff that's AWESOME because no body would want it. I wear what I want and what I think goes well together. I don't buy something based off whether or not it is a trend but because I like it. I think that the bandeau idea is great and I have a couple of them from years ago. I wear what expresses my personality and I think everyone should. We shouldn't dress based off what other people think but by what makes us who we are. So be adventurous sometimes...you might find that you like it!

  1. I have to admit that I don't really stretch my fashion limit. I tend to wear whatever is comfortable on my "off" days and whatever looks professional on the days that I have to work. But, I agree that people should be able to wear whatever they want. It also sucks that your store has all of this discounted merchandise because people that live here aren't open-minded. If I had some spare cash, I could shop--that would be awesome! haha

  2. I'm a big fan of simple, yet clean fashion. Nothing too ridiculous, but definitely staying true to who I am. One thing I've always loved doing is rocking ties every once in a while, just because. It's something that people know me by and I'm glad it's something I can do to express myself. I know I don't understand, but I feel like women have a lot more pressure and options when it comes to dressing. When it all comes down to it, guys just aren't given a lot to work with. We really have to try and express ourselves with only so many options.

  3. I tend to be very simple. I am a t-shirt and jeans guy when I am not in work attire. The shoes I wear is based on comfort/function. I run a lot and play tennis. So the two types of shoes I wear the most are Asics and Prince which I would say are not your main stream brands. Where I do get out of the box just a hair is my work cloths. (This I am sure is not out of the box for you.) I will wear more non traditional suits with a colored shirt and wild tie. So for the business world its a little off to the wild side, but not really out off of main stream lane.

  4. I loved what you wrote Lydia, you are very right about fashion around Wilmington, or lack there of. I feel like everyone here always dress the same but we have some awesome stores that sell very great, one of a kind pieces but people just bipass them and go straight to jack rogers and headbands. I have nothing wrong with either of those things, i wish people would appreciate more fashion than just what is in style or hippest at that time. I was thinking earlier about how I wish I had I was more creative and spontaneous about my wardrobe...but maybe sw can help this summer :)

  5. Fashion has always been interesting to me, how things can go in and out of popularity. Somethings that were once cool become cool again and some styles are disappear completely. I used to wear Converse all stars high tops in middle school into high school. Towards the end of high school converse was bought out by Nike and all of a sudden there was a boost in the popularity of those shoes. I've always been a fan of comfort over style, but I have developed my own over the years, skate shoes, loose pants and a shirt that fits.

  6. I agree with Ashley. I am certainly not high fashion, but I do have my own personal style. I wear what I like and what I feel good in. I get many odd looks from people I pass on the sidewalk, but isn't that what fashion is anyway? Being unique, different and turning heads? Although the reviews may sometimes carry a negative connotation with them, my looks make people talk about what they see. And what is fashion but giving everyone something to talk about.

  7. I totally agree. I never try to fit in with others when it comes to fashion. I beleive in wearing whatever you want and making it yours. The most important thing about fashion is being confident. However many people do not understand that it would prefer to wear tshirt and jeans. In retail it is important to purchse what can sell. I love fashion!

  8. I am glad you dont fit in the norm. Something that sets you apart from the rest. Just like bob asked you many years ago did you get dressed in the dark? Always mixing styles and making things your own. You can always swim against the current. Hopefully that never changes with you. Glad your style works out and glad you wear what you believe in.
