Haiti

I am sure that everyone knows the ins and outs of what is going on in Haiti. I think that it is incredible that so many people have stepped up to offer help. The Haitian people are still in desperate need of money, food and supplies. The amount of devastation they have endured is more than many of us could imagine. Yes, Katrina was devastating and a lot of people were injured and died from that storm but they, with help, recovered. The Haitian people were not living the same lives that we live in America. We are a blessed nation with a lot of opportunity and ways to get out of financial trouble when we need it. I have heard and seen a lot of comments about how we need to help our own country before we help others and it sickens me and saddens me to hear this. Yes, our country is in a ridiculous debt and we do have our own poverty and despair to fix here, but the people of Haiti just lost everything. They lost family members, homes, possessions and supplies necessary to live. We should all be thankful for what we have and willing to help others when they need it. It is going to take millions of dollars to rebuild their city and to feed them and it is hard for those who are going to help to even get to those in need. I feel that it is important to remember what we have and what we have been blessed with. I feel that it is important to give compassion to those who need it regardless of what state we are in. If we don't do what we can to help these people, then we wouldn't deserve help if our country or even state experienced devastation such as this. I am a firm believer in paying it forward and believe that if you show love and compassion to those who need it then you will be rewarded.

  1. I have heard some grumblings that you talked about too, with people saying we need to fix our own country. The sad part is that these same people who say we just need to work on our country aren’t trying to even fix the problems over here. Even with all of the issues we deal with, we are still in better shape than most of the world. That being said, we have an obligation to help those who are less fortunate than us, especially Haiti in their time of need.

  2. I too have heard the upset people complaining about the grace that our country has spread on Haiti. We are a country that is looked upon to do the right and ethicial thing. We are a nation that has been blessed with many things and great advances in technology. I think it shows what a country that we live in to go and help these people. But on the other hand we do need to sometimes look at our own country and try to fix our own problems, more of a fine line. We have put lots of money into Haiti but a long time stay there would be expensive and funds that we do not have. Unless Obama can print another trillion....

  3. I am somwhat torn when it comes to Haiti.

I am not soulless, and have compassion for people. So that side of me wants to help Haiti.

At the same time, there are people suffering just as horribly as the people in Haiti every day in this country. Do they deserve the help more? Less? The same? I don't know.

What happened to those people was horrible, yes. But I think think before we take care of anyone else we should take care of ourselves first. Once the US pulls itself out of this economic hole, we will be able to focus our efforts more effectively elsewhere.

  4. I agree to some extent, while I think it is horrible what is going on in Haiti, I also think America has some serious problems to work out. It is important to help out people elsewhere in the world, especially in the face of such tragedy, but the state of our country's economy is not stable. My job has also been made a bit harder by this situation, I work at the Calling Center and I call out asking for donations to the school. The school is in financial trouble as well after the $12 million budget cuts, and much of the alumni are donating to Haiti and don't feel they can give to their alma mater.
